Unbelievably sad news of the loss of a former 2nd XV Captain

Many of us woke up yesterday morning with the dreadful news of the sudden and unexpected death of Carl Lawrence at 59 years.  We all at Swansea Uplands send our heartfelt condolences to Cheryl and all Carl's family and friends.  Simon Rees pays his personal tribute to one of the clubs great characters

It is with such a heavy heart that I share the sad news of Carl's sudden and untimely
passing. Carl was skipper of the 2nd XV for three seasons. The highlight of this period was Carl leading the 2nd XV to win the district league cup and plaque 1992/1993.

Those who knew him will remember his quick wit and first to start the after match singing. We all have our own individual memories of him. He enjoyed a challenge, for example when a sign appeared on the Club's television set stating SPORT ONLY he successfully argued that Baywatch and Gladiators (TV series of the 90's) were sporting events.

He loved going on tour and I had the privilege of sharing a room with him on numerous trips. Carl was a gifted all round sportsman playing for Mumbles and Landore Cricket Club as a talented opening batsman. We will all miss that smile and he was always first to welcome new players to the Uplands Club. Carl will be sadly missed and our thoughts and condolences go to Carl's family and friends.
