Sad news of the death of a former Uplands 1st XV player

It is we great sadness that we have learned of the death of Barcley Thomas, who died at Morriston Hospital on 10th December 2020. We extend our deepest sympathies to Barcleys' family and friends for their loss.

The words below were written by his wife, Sheila and passed to the club via our President Richard Gwynn.

My husband James Barcley Thomas (84yrs) recently passed away and I have been thinking about what he held close to him. Undoubtedly his love of rugby and Uplands RFC was extremely important to him throughout his lifetime.  He played for the club throughout the 1960's and early 70’s and I believe was nick named “Sparks". His favourite position was full back, although he played in all positions across the backs.

Always a rugby man, Barcley in later life loved nothing better than watching the game. And was thrilled when our grandson from an early age joined his local club South Gower and started to learn to play. Barcley loved attending games, watching him and his team play, from grass roots, through to now being a teenager.

Barcley always held the club dear and treasured the lifelong friends and memories made. He wore his club tie with pride and at home his old team photos remain prominently positioned. I just felt I wanted to inform the club of Barcley’s passing and express how much he loved and valued Uplands RFC.

Heartfelt thanks to Shelia for sharing these memories with us.
