J D W Maclean

The club was saddened to hear of the passing of John Maclean.  John, 86, educated at Blundells School, Devon, served as an officer in the 1st Battalion of The Welch Regiment, Korea 1951/52, joining the club on his return, club captain in season 1955/56 (the most successful season until recently), played outside half for Swansea RFC during 1957/58 season before returning to the Ups to continue playing and becoming the clubs first coach in 1968.

He continued coaching until 1973 during this period he became a disciple of Ray Williams who revolutionised coaching in Wales. In 1973 John moved to coach Hendy RFC with considerable success which resulted in him becoming coach of Llanelli RFC 1978/82. Later becoming Chairman of Llanelli RFC 1991/92 and 1993/94 before joining the WRU Committee as a National Representative. He was President of Hendy RFC and Pontardulais Town Band.

Over the years John was always very supportive of Swansea Uplands RFC and regularly attended Vice President reunions.

The club would like to extend their deepest condolences to Ann and Family.

A true gentleman.
